Natural Sleep Aids UK: What Actually Helps (An Honest Guide)

Natural Sleep Aids UK: What Actually Helps (An Honest Guide)

If I had a pound for every customer who's walked into the shop asking for "something natural for sleep", I could retire to a very quiet cottage and sleep twelve hours a night myself. It's the most common request we get after energy, and it's also the category with the most rubbish in it. Half the sleep supplements UK retailers push are fairy dust in a capsule. So here's the guide I wish I could hand every one of those customers: the natural sleep aids that have something behind them, the ones that are traditional but thin on evidence, and the boring basics that beat all of them.

One thing before we start. I'll tell you honestly how strong the evidence is for each option, because they are not all equal, and anyone who tells you they are is selling something. Also, nothing here is a sedative and nothing here treats a medical condition. If your sleep problems are severe, long-standing, or you suspect something like sleep apnoea, see your GP first. That's the right order to do things in.

Magnesium: where I'd start

Of all the supplements for sleep UK customers ask me about, magnesium is the one with the most solid footing. It has official EFSA-authorised claims: magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system, normal psychological function, normal muscle function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. That's regulator-approved language, not marketing. And plenty of us don't hit the NHS guideline intake of 300mg a day for men and 270mg for women from food alone.

Form matters enormously. Skip magnesium oxide, the cheap form that's poorly absorbed and mostly used in laxatives. For evening use, go for citrate or glycinate. Citrate is the best value of the well-absorbed forms and it's what's in our own LSC Magnesium Citrate 450mg. Glycinate is magnesium bound to glycine, very gentle on the stomach, and popular specifically at bedtime. Take either 30 to 60 minutes before bed and give it two to four weeks before you judge it.

Glycine: the quiet one

Glycine is an amino acid your body makes anyway, and a handful of small studies have looked at around 3g taken before bed, with participants reporting better subjective sleep quality. The research base is small, so I'll call it what it is: promising, not proven. Where it earns its place is as the partner in magnesium glycinate, so if you buy that form you're getting both in one capsule. Cheap, safe at sensible doses, and worth a try if plain magnesium hasn't quite got you there.

Montmorency cherry: the interesting one

Montmorency tart cherries naturally contain small amounts of melatonin and have been studied for sleep in a few small trials, with modest improvements in sleep time reported. Again, small studies, honest verdict: interesting rather than conclusive. Viridian's Cherry Night powder is built around Montmorency cherry with glycine and magnesium alongside, which covers three of the options in this article in one evening drink. It's a customer favourite for exactly that reason.

Magnesium: where I'd start scene

Chamomile, valerian and lemon balm: the traditionals

These three are the herbs your gran would recognise, and I'll be straight with you: the human evidence for all of them is mixed. They've been used for relaxation and bedtime for centuries, and some small studies show benefit while others show not much. None of them holds an authorised EFSA claim. That doesn't make them useless, it makes them a personal experiment. Plenty of my regulars swear by a chamomile tea ritual, and the ritual itself is doing some of the work, which is fine by me.

Valerian root is the most studied of the three. If you want to try it properly, we stock Viridian's Organic Valerian 400mg, a clean, sensibly dosed version with nothing padding it out. Lemon balm often turns up paired with L-theanine, an amino acid from green tea that customers use for evening wind-down, and our LSC Theanine, Ashwagandha and Lemon Balm Complex puts those together in one capsule.

The boring bit that outperforms everything

I'd be taking your money under false pretences if I didn't say this: no natural sleep aid outperforms decent sleep hygiene. Regular bed and wake times, even at weekends. Caffeine cut-off by early afternoon, because it hangs around in your system far longer than you think. A dark, cool room. Phone out of the bedroom, or at least out of your hand. Alcohol honestly assessed, because it knocks you out then wrecks the second half of the night. Get those roughly right and a supplement has something to build on. Get them wrong and you're pouring capsules into a leaky bucket.

Quick questions from the shop floor

What is the best natural sleep aid in the UK?

For most people I'd start with magnesium citrate or glycinate, because it has authorised claims behind it and decades of use. After that, Montmorency cherry and glycine are the interesting next steps, and the traditional herbs are worth a personal trial.

Are natural sleep aids safe to take every night?

Worth knowing
At sensible doses, magnesium and glycine are fine for most healthy adults daily. Herbs like valerian are generally used short-term or in cycles. If you're pregnant, on medication or have a health condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first, and don't combine several sedating herbs on top of prescription sleep medication.
How long do natural sleep aids take to work?

Longer than you'd like. Magnesium typically needs two to four weeks of consistent use. Herbal options vary wildly by person. Nothing here works like a sleeping tablet, and honestly, that's the point.

Can I take magnesium and valerian together?

Most healthy adults can, and plenty do. Start with one at a time though, so you actually know what's helping. Adding three things at once tells you nothing.

From the shop

Most sleep products on the market aren't worth the tub they come in. The handful above are the ones I'll actually hand across the counter, and you'll find them all in our Sleep & Calm collection, which only contains things customers come back for. If you're not sure where to start, ring the shop on 07711 393130 or come into 22 Hyde Rd, Paignton, and we'll work out what fits your situation. Thirty years behind this counter has taught me that honest advice sells more tubs in the long run than hype ever did. - Mark
