Best Supplements for Joint Pain UK: What Works and What Doesn't

Best Supplements for Joint Pain UK: What Works and What Doesn't

Every week someone comes into the shop, usually rubbing a knee or flexing a stiff hand, and asks me what the best supplements for joint pain are. It is one of the most common conversations I have, and one where I have to be more honest than most of the industry wants to be. Some joint supplements have decent evidence. Some have mixed evidence that I will explain properly. And some are landfill in a capsule. After thirty years of watching customers come back and tell me what actually helped, here is my straight guide to the lot. One thing first: supplements support joint health and comfort, they do not treat arthritis or any other diagnosed condition. If your joint pain is severe, sudden, or getting worse, see your GP before you see me.

The short version
  • Glucosamine is the most famous joint supplement in Britain, and the evidence is genuinely mixed, so let me give you the useful version.
  • Ask people to name a joint supplement and nobody says fish oil, yet it is one of the better-supported options on the shelf.

The best supplements for joint pain: my shortlist

If I had to strip the shelf down to the options I trust most, it would be these four: glucosamine sulphate, omega-3, curcumin (with boswellia close behind), and collagen. Each works on a different part of the problem, cartilage structure, inflammatory balance, or connective tissue building blocks, which is also why they combine sensibly. Below is the honest case for each.

Glucosamine and chondroitin: the old guard

Glucosamine is the most famous joint supplement in Britain, and the evidence is genuinely mixed, so let me give you the useful version. The trials that showed benefit mostly used glucosamine sulphate at 1500mg daily; many that showed nothing used the cheaper hydrochloride form or feeble doses. That distinction matters more than any headline. My shop-floor experience over three decades matches the research: a worthwhile share of people who take the sulphate form at the full dose for at least eight to twelve weeks report meaningfully more comfortable joints, and a share notice nothing. Nobody can tell you in advance which you will be. Chondroitin has a similar mixed-but-respectable picture and often pairs with it. Our LSC Joint Complex is built around the researched dose of glucosamine sulphate, with MSM alongside, which supplies the sulphur that cartilage and connective tissue are partly built from, plus curcumin and boswellia. That combination exists because the mechanisms are different, not to pad the label.

Omega-3: the one people forget is a joint supplement

Ask people to name a joint supplement and nobody says fish oil, yet it is one of the better-supported options on the shelf. EPA, one of the two main omega-3 fatty acids in marine oils, feeds into the pathways that resolve inflammation, and the research around joint comfort and morning stiffness, particularly at doses of 1000 to 2000mg of combined EPA and DHA daily, is respectable. It also earns its place through everything else it supports: EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function, which matters to exactly the demographic dealing with stiff knees. If you already take a quality omega-3, you are part-way into a joint routine without knowing it. Krill oil, such as our LSC Krill Oil, delivers omega-3 in the well-absorbed phospholipid form with astaxanthin alongside.

Curcumin and boswellia: the botanicals with real data

Turmeric is fashionable, which normally makes me suspicious, but curcumin, its active compound, has a proper body of human research around joint comfort and inflammatory balance. The catch is absorption: plain turmeric powder from the spice rack is absorbed so poorly it is essentially decorative. You need a formulated extract, typically with black pepper's piperine, which boosts absorption many times over. That is exactly how our LSC Turmeric 550mg is built, standardised extract plus piperine, because without that the tub genuinely is not worth buying, including from us. Boswellia serrata, Indian frankincense, is less famous but has several decent trials behind it for joint comfort, working through a different inflammatory pathway to curcumin, which is why the two appear together in serious formulas.

You need a formulated extract, typically with black pepper's piperine, which boosts absorption many times over.

Collagen: the newer contender

Collagen has gone from fad to respectable in about a decade. It is the main structural protein in cartilage, tendon and ligament, and trials on hydrolysed collagen peptides, typically around 10g daily, taken consistently for three months or more, show encouraging results for joint comfort, including in active people whose joints simply work hard. The evidence base is younger and smaller than glucosamine's, so I pitch it honestly: promising, worth a proper trial, particularly for tendon and ligament niggles rather than deep cartilage wear. Vitamin C belongs alongside it, since vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage and bones. That is also a rare authorised claim that speaks directly to joints, and it costs buttons.

What I would not spend money on

Homeopathic joint remedies: no. Copper bracelets: lovely gift, no evidence. Cider vinegar for joints: kitchen folklore. "Joint blends" listing fifteen ingredients at doses too small to matter: this is the fairy-dust labelling I have complained about for years, where a formula contains 50mg of something researched at 1000mg so the name can appear on the tin. Turn the tub round and check doses against the numbers in this article. If the label hides them in a proprietary blend, put it back.

Building a sensible joint routine

My standard counter advice: pick a foundation of glucosamine sulphate at 1500mg with MSM, add omega-3 daily, and add curcumin if you need more support. Give it twelve honest weeks, because cartilage and connective tissue adapt slowly and every decent trial ran that long. Judge it on morning stiffness, stairs, and what you can comfortably do, not on hope. Alongside that, keep moving, because joints are fed by movement, and carrying less body weight remains the single most effective thing anyone can do for load-bearing joints. The full range, including bundles that combine the above sensibly, lives in our Joint and Bone collection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best supplement for joint pain?

There is no single winner, but glucosamine sulphate at 1500mg daily has the longest track record, and omega-3 and formulated curcumin are the strongest supporting acts. Combining them addresses different mechanisms, which is the logic behind our Joint Complex.

How long do joint supplements take to work?

Eight to twelve weeks minimum, and I mean that. The tissues involved remodel slowly. Anyone promising relief in days is either selling a painkiller or telling fibs.

Can I take joint supplements with arthritis medication?
Worth knowing
Often yes, but check with your GP or pharmacist first, particularly omega-3 or curcumin alongside blood-thinning medication. Supplements should sit alongside your medical care, never replace it.
Is glucosamine safe for people with shellfish allergy?

Traditional glucosamine is made from shellfish, so check the source. Ours uses a shellfish-free glucosamine, but always read the label on any brand you buy.

From the shop

Most supplements aren't worth the tub they come in, and joint products are where I see the most cynical labelling in the whole industry, because they are sold to people in discomfort who will try anything. The honest picture is this: a handful of ingredients with real evidence, at real doses, given a real twelve weeks, help a good share of the people who try them. That is not a miracle, but for the customers who walk back into the shop moving more freely, it does not need to be. Come and see us at Hyde Road in Paignton if you want your current tub given an honest once-over. I enjoy those conversations more than I should.
