The Question I Get After Someone Has Done Their Research

Most people who walk into the shop these days have already done a bit of reading. They know to look for EPA and DHA on the label. They know triglyceride form absorbs better than ethyl ester. Good. That saves us ten minutes.

The short version
  • Most people who walk into the shop these days have already done a bit of reading.
  • Individual results vary depending on your starting point, your diet, your dose, and the quality of the product.

But then comes the follow-up question, usually about a week after they have started the bottle: "I have been taking it every day. I do not feel any different. Is it doing anything?"

That is what this post is for. Not what to buy. That is covered elsewhere, including over on our Omega and Oils collection. This is about what happens after you start, how long it realistically takes, and what signs, if any, tell you it is working.

Why Omega-3 Is Not Like a Painkiller

Omega-3 is not an acute supplement. It does not do something you feel in an hour. It is not caffeine. It works by gradually shifting the fatty acid profile in your cell membranes. Your body has to incorporate EPA and DHA into the structure of billions of cells. That takes weeks, not days. Months before the picture is complete.

So when someone says it is not working after a week, I always say the same thing: you are not even in the window yet. Keep going.

A Realistic Timeline

Individual results vary depending on your starting point, your diet, your dose, and the quality of the product. But here is a rough framework based on thirty years of talking to customers.

  • Weeks 1 to 2 - Nothing noticeable for most people. The supplement is beginning to work into your system but you are nowhere near tissue saturation. This is normal. Do not stop.
  • Weeks 3 to 4 - Some people with dry skin report it feeling softer. People taking it alongside a generally improved diet sometimes notice joints feeling slightly more comfortable. Early signals, not guarantees.
  • Weeks 6 to 8 - This is where most consistent users start to report something. Joint comfort is the most common feedback I hear. Also dry eye symptoms easing. Nothing dramatic. More like a background improvement than a bang.
  • Months 3 to 6 - The fuller picture emerges here. Blood-based changes, like shifts in triglyceride levels, happen in this window. If your GP is monitoring your bloods, this is the timeframe worth discussing with them.
  • Beyond 6 months - Omega-3 is a long game. Most people who have taken it for a year or more tell me they only noticed it working when they stopped and felt the difference.

What You Might Actually Notice

People expect a big obvious shift. What omega-3 tends to deliver is subtler. Here are the things customers have genuinely reported back to me, without prompting.

  • Skin texture - Omega-3 contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. People notice this more if they were eating very little oily fish beforehand.
  • Dry eyes - A number of customers have told me their eyes feel less gritty after consistent use. EPA and DHA contribute to normal vision.
  • Joint comfort - This is the big one for my older customers. A background easing rather than anything dramatic. We stock Viridian Joint Omega Oil Vegan specifically for people who want omega support blended with other plant-based ingredients aimed at joint comfort, and it gets solid repeat business.
  • Mood and focus - DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function. Some people report feeling slightly more even. Others notice nothing here at all.
  • Triglycerides - You will not feel this. It shows up in blood tests. If this is a reason your GP has suggested omega-3, keep them in the loop and get your bloods checked at the right interval.

And here is what you almost certainly will not notice: a dramatic transformation in the first month. Anyone selling you that story is selling you something else.

Dose Matters More Than People Realise

A lot of people are taking omega-3 at a dose that is technically correct on the label but functionally quite low for their situation. A standard capsule might deliver 300mg of combined EPA and DHA. If you have been low for years, that is not going to shift things quickly.

Higher-concentration products like Wiley's Peak EPA Omega-3 Fish Oil deliver considerably more EPA per serving. It is one of the products I point people toward when they tell me their previous brand did nothing. Often the product was not the problem. The dose was.

If you are vegan, algal-based omega-3 works well provided the EPA and DHA content is meaningful. We stock Vegan Algal Omega-3 Oil by Viridian, which I recommend without hesitation for anyone avoiding fish-derived products.

Fish Oil vs Algal Oil

Feature Fish Oil Algal Oil
Source Small oily fish Marine microalgae
EPA content Generally higher Variable, often DHA-dominant
Suitable for vegans No Yes
Absorption Good in triglyceride form Good
Taste or aftertaste Can occur with lower quality products Usually cleaner

Neither is categorically better. It comes down to your diet, your values, and which form you will actually take consistently. Consistency is everything with this supplement.

How Do You Know It Is Working?

For most people, there is no clear moment of realisation. What tends to happen is quieter than that. A customer came back about four months after starting a quality fish oil. She said she had forgotten about her stiff fingers on cold mornings. She had not noticed them improving. She just noticed they had stopped being something she thought about. That is typical omega-3 feedback. Gradual, background, easy to miss.

Worth knowing
If you want something more objective, ask your GP to check your blood lipid panel before you start and again after three to six months. That gives you a concrete marker. Talk to your GP first if you are on any medication, particularly blood thinners. Omega-3 at higher doses can interact with certain medicines and that is not something to navigate on your own.

FAQ

How long does omega-3 take to work?

Most people notice nothing in the first two weeks. A more realistic window for early signs is six to eight weeks of consistent daily use. Meaningful tissue changes take three to six months. Do not judge it in week one.

Should I take omega-3 with food?

Yes. Most people absorb it better alongside a meal containing some fat. It also reduces the chance of a fishy aftertaste. Take it with breakfast or dinner and you are unlikely to have any issues.

What dose of EPA and DHA should I be taking?

As a general daily maintenance dose, look for at least 500mg of combined EPA and DHA. If you are taking it at your GP's suggestion for a specific reason, follow their guidance before adjusting the dose upward.

Does omega-3 go off?

Yes. Oxidised fish oil smells strongly rancid, noticeably worse than normal fish oil. Keep it in the fridge once opened, check the expiry date, and buy from a retailer with decent stock turnover. That is one advantage of buying from a small shop rather than a large warehouse operation.

Is omega-3 worth taking if I already eat oily fish twice a week?

If you genuinely eat two portions of oily fish a week, your baseline is already better than most. Whether an additional supplement adds meaningful benefit depends on your full diet and health picture. Worth a conversation with your GP if you are unsure before spending money on it.

From the shop

Thirty years in this trade has taught me one thing about omega-3: the people who get the most from it pick a decent product, take it consistently, and give it time. They do not swap brands every month. They do not take it for a fortnight and write it off. They just get on with it. If you are not sure which product suits your situation, or you want to know whether your current dose is realistic, ring us on 07711 393130 or come into 22 Hyde Rd, Paignton. We will sort it out in five minutes. No hype, just the right tub.
