"I want something for my gut" is probably the sentence I hear most in the shop these days, and my first question back is always the same: what is your gut actually doing? Because gut health supplements are not one thing. Probiotics, prebiotics and digestive enzymes do three completely different jobs, and I regularly meet people who have spent months taking the wrong one for their problem. This guide explains all three in plain English, what the evidence supports, and how to work out which, if any, you actually need. Gut health supplements: the one-minute version
Think of your gut as a garden. Probiotics are new plants: live bacteria you add in, hoping they take hold and contribute something useful. Prebiotics are the fertiliser: fibres you cannot digest but your existing good bacteria can, so feeding them helps the garden you already have. Digestive enzymes are a different job altogether: they are the tools that break food down in the first place, proteins that chop up carbohydrates, fats and proteins so you can absorb them. Add plants, feed the soil, or improve the machinery. Three different jobs, three different products, three different reasons to buy.
Probiotics: strains matter more than slogans
Probiotics are live bacteria taken in amounts intended to be beneficial, and this is the category with both the best research and the worst marketing. Here is what the research actually supports with reasonable confidence: certain strains help maintain a healthy gut balance during and after a course of antibiotics, some strains have decent evidence around occasional digestive discomfort and bloating, and the gut houses a large share of your immune tissue, which is why the area attracts so much immune research.
The word doing the heavy lifting there is strains. "Probiotic" on a label tells you almost nothing, in the same way "dog" does not tell you whether you are getting a chihuahua or a wolfhound. The evidence belongs to specific named strains, such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, probably the most researched probiotic strain in the world, or Bifidobacterium longum BB536. A quality product names its strains, not just the species. Two honest caveats. First, probiotics are transient guests for most people; they help while you take them, but they rarely take up permanent residence, which is why consistency matters. Second, the research is genuinely mixed for some uses, and anyone telling you a probiotic will fix everything from your skin to your love life is selling, not informing.

Prebiotics: feeding the bacteria you already own
Prebiotics get a fraction of the attention and arguably deserve more. These are fibres, inulin, FOS, GOS, resistant starch, that pass through digestion intact and get fermented by your resident bacteria in the colon. The bacteria multiply and produce short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, which is the preferred fuel of the cells lining your colon. Feeding your own garden is arguably a more durable strategy than forever adding new plants.
The best news here is that the richest sources are food: onions, garlic, leeks, oats, slightly underripe bananas, beans and lentils. A varied, plant-heavy diet is the best prebiotic product on the market and it is sold in the supermarket. Supplemental prebiotics have their place when the diet is not there yet, with one warning from years of shop-floor feedback: start low. Take a full dose of inulin on day one and your gut will fire a protest you can hear from the next room. Build up over a couple of weeks.
Digestive enzymes: who actually needs them?
Enzymes are the most misunderstood of the three. Your pancreas already produces them in quantity, so a healthy digestive system does not need help breaking food down, and enzymes are not a daily essential the way the wellness industry sometimes pretends. Where they earn their keep is in specific situations: lactase genuinely helps people with lactase deficiency handle dairy, and alpha-galactosidase helps break down the fermentable sugars in beans that cause wind. Some people find broad-spectrum enzymes helpful with heavy or rich meals, especially as they get older. My honest advice is to treat enzymes as a targeted tool for an identified problem, not a default purchase. If every meal causes you trouble regardless of what you eat, that is a pattern worth investigating with your GP before you supplement over the top of it.
Where to start: a simple order of operations
If your gut is generally unhappy, here is the sequence I suggest at the counter. First, look at the boring fundamentals for two weeks: fibre variety, water, alcohol, sleep, stress and eating speed, because they move the needle more than anything in a capsule. Second, if you have had antibiotics recently or your symptoms date from a stomach bug, a named-strain probiotic for eight weeks is a reasonable experiment. Third, if your diet is low on plants, add prebiotic foods gradually before you buy prebiotic powders. Fourth, use enzymes only for the specific situations above. Should I take probiotics and prebiotics together?
You can, and some products combine them (called synbiotics). If your budget only stretches to one, I would generally back a plant-varied diet plus a named-strain probiotic, because the diet covers the prebiotic side free of charge.
When should I take a probiotic?
Most evidence points to taking them shortly before or with breakfast, when stomach acid is relatively lower. With an acid-resistant capsule the timing matters less. Daily consistency beats perfect timing.
How long before I notice anything?
Give a probiotic four to eight weeks. Prebiotic changes often show within two to four weeks. Enzymes work on the meal you take them with, so you know almost immediately whether they help.
Do probiotics survive stomach acid?
Some strains are naturally hardy, many are not, which is why delivery matters. Look for acid-resistant or delayed-release capsules and a count guaranteed at expiry. A billion bacteria that died in the bottle help nobody.
